Sammen med en urokkeligt munter producent og en opblæst kameramand sendes meteorologen Phil Connors til Punxsutawney i Pennsylvania for at dække fejringen af forårets ankomst. Men på vej dertil bliver Phil fanget i en stor snestorm og strander i en lille by. Da Phil vågner næste morgen, opdager han, at han oplever gårsdagen igen og igen... og igen.

Phil is played by Bill Murray, and Murray is indispensable; before he makes the film wonderful, he does a more difficult thing, which is to make it bearable.
